His passion for surfing was the start on his path to becoming one of the most famous sports, nature and outdoor photographers in the world. After extreme long-distance bike races, such as the 930 km Westfjord Race through Iceland, Chris Burkard came back home to California and set about realizing his next dream: going dirt jumping with friends behind the house. So he simply built his own jump trails in his backyard to share the fun of biking with his community.
"A look into Chris Burkard's backyard" is the first episode of the Schwalbe "Build your dream" video series. A video series that focuses on unique characters like Chris who foster a community through trail building.
Chris Burkard discovered his true passion for cycling late in life. For a long time, the bicycle was simply the best vehicle to satisfy his thirst for adventure and discover nature. When Chris tackles something new, he does it right, like on Iceland: First he circumnavigated the island on a road bike (413 km), later he was the first cyclist to cross it from east to west (975 km), and he finished off with a north-south tour - in winter (526 km).
In his adventures, Chris Burkard was on all kinds of bikes and surfaces, only one thing was missing: the mountain bike. His buddy KC Deane finally convinced him to give mountain biking a chance. And so began a new love affair.
With his new passion, a little ingenuity and the help of good friends, Chris fulfilled a childhood dream: he built his own jump trail in the backyard. The local MTB scene was thrilled, because now they can all live out their passion together.
