THE OPTIMUM WHEEL FOR SCHWALBE TUBELESS ROAD TIRES
Note: The wheel’s shoulder diameter is the diameter measured from shoulder to shoulder. This corresponds to the ETRTO number after the hyphen. In the case of SCHWALBE road bike tires, e.g. 28-622.
The outer diameter of the rim is a crucial factor. It is determined by the rim’s shoulder diameter and the flank height. They are specified by the ETRTO standard.
|28''||622||621.95 +/- 0.5||5.2 +/- 0.5|
The values apply to all rims, regardless of whether they are tubeless or normal rims. For derailing safety, it is important to ensure a minimum flank height of no less than 4.7 mm. For tubeless tires, the shoulder diameter should be within the positive range of the permitted tolerance.
It is not absolutely imperative for the rim to be air-tight. An air-tight rim base can be easily achieved with proper tubeless rim tape. A welded rim with a smooth rim base is ideal for this. Rims with double-eyelets, however, cannot be sealed with a rim tape. With plugged rims, it is necessary to use at least 30 ml DocBlue sealant in addition to rim tape to ensure a reliable seal.
For easy mounting, the drop center of the rim should be 2.6 to 3 mm deep, concave and at least 12 mm wide. The rim’s inner width should be at least 17C, while 19C or 21C is optimum.
